Video Lesson
Ever feel like you're drifting, unsure why you make the choices you do? It's often because you're not aligned with your core values. Knowing these values acts like a compass, guiding you toward a more fulfilling life. Let's dive into how to identify them.
So, what are core values? They're the fundamental beliefs that drive your actions and decisions. They define what's truly important to you. Why does this matter? Because when your actions align with your values, you feel authentic and energized. When they don't, you experience stress and dissatisfaction. Imagine Sarah, a marketing manager. She felt burnt out. Turns out, her company's cutthroat tactics clashed with her values of honesty and integrity. Once she understood this disconnect, she started looking for a role at a more ethical company.
Now, how do you identify your values? First, brainstorm. Think about times you felt most proud, fulfilled, or deeply connected. What values were present in those moments? Jot down words that resonate – things like creativity, security, family, adventure, learning, or service. Next, narrow it down. Choose your top 5-7 values. This is tough! Ask yourself: Which values are non-negotiable? Which ones would you fight for? Prioritize ruthlessly. Finally, define what each value means to you. "Creativity" might mean expressing yourself through art for one person, and problem-solving for another. Get specific!
Let’s say John identifies “family”, “learning”, and “financial security” as his core values. He can then use these to evaluate opportunities. A job requiring constant travel might clash with “family”. A role with no growth potential might conflict with “learning”. This framework helps him make decisions that align with his authentic self.
Okay, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to spend the next 15 minutes brainstorming your core values. Write down at least 10 possibilities, then narrow it down to your top 5. Understanding your values is the first step toward living a more intentional and fulfilling life. Go get started!
